The latest addition to the sequence of parks and trails throughout Orange County's Great Park Neighborhoods, this park provides aquatic and playground fun for the whole family. Playful shade structures and palm colonnades are accentuated while the walkways through the park meet Irvine's demanding Security Code. Developed by FivePoints, with architecture by LPA, Inc., and landscape architecture by BrightView. Full mechanical, electrical, plumbing, Low Voltage/A/V services provided by tk1sc.

Providing open space amongst a sea of new housing, Water and Wellness create an enjoyable destination for residents of all ages. A mid-century modern design palette centered on health, wellness, and water, the park is packed with an array of amenities to support the health-centric concept. The design challenge was to create as much wonder at night as the park has during the day while also meeting the strict city security lighting and state energy requirements.

Lighting Design Solution: The design uses light to create focal points and destinations to explore and uses the absence of light to develop quiet respites and contrast. Evenly illuminated walkways are defined with slender wood poles using simple LED fixtures, leading to all of the park's features. Large heritage trees that were rescued and protected from the development are scattered throughout the park and illuminated with a combination of inground and in-tree lights. Small pieces of artwork, nestled into planting areas, are softly illuminated against darker backdrops of the landscaped open spaces.

Dividing the park is the "central spine," a large arcing walkway that runs the park's length, from which all of the amenities are served. The spine is flanked by giant Canary Island Date Palms, preserved from the area and replanted, boldly uplit from LED ingrade fixtures. Two matching steel and 3-Form shade structures adorn each end of the spine, uplighting the curved white structure, and colorful acrylic panels create a playful, inviting element at the park's entrances.

By illuminating critical aspects of the landscape and architectural design, the park's primary features come to life at night, allowing users to enjoy them at any time. The selection of cost-conscious and efficacious LED light fixtures kept the energy usage below state energy code while delivering the design concepts on budget.
