The Student Recreation Center is a 138,000 square-foot facility for exercise and leisure activity that promotes lifelong health and wellness. This project aimed to create a student recreational center where students can workout, hang out, and relax in a sustainable environment. The 2-story project includes a gymnasium, sports courts, weight training & fitness areas, multipurpose rooms & a 5,000 square-foot pool area with showers &locker rooms. tk1sc provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering, low voltage systems design, and lighting design for this eco-friendly LEED Gold certified building.

Lighting Solutions: We designed the exterior illumination to minimize light trespass into the night sky through carefully aimed fixtures with tight optical control. The strong, linear architectural statement is clear through the transparent curtain wall, and louvers of the main entrance provide daylighting during the day without direct sun penetration and an inviting, lantern-like effect at night.

The reception desk provides a clean and futuristic entry to the state-of-the-art facility, using linear LED fixtures to provide the backlighting for the translucent panels, and LED downlights for task lighting. A minimalist but highly efficient T5HO linear fluorescent fixture illuminates the aerobics area, keeping the wattage per square foot low while maintaining comfortable light levels. The 30,000+ hour life of the T5HO lamps minimizes the maintenance costs. The entry to the badminton and volleyball courts continues the consistent look of solid and linear gestures.

The linear fluorescent lighting within the main gym provides beautiful, even illumination and a striking design statement complementing theT5HO lamping, with three times the useful life of traditional metal halide sources, provides for an almost maintenance-free facility. The square apertures in the ceiling are skylights, providing energy-free, even illumination during daylight hours.

Linear fluorescent fixtures integrated into the window mullions provide direct and indirect lighting off the main corridor ceiling surface and support the linear and vertical architectural statements.
